These three photos show the long removed movable bridge that was located just downriver of where Kahunaville is located today. The Wilmington and Western (W&W) and later the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad used this bridge to gain access to the industrial areas of South Wilmington including the Wilmington Marine Terminal (now the Port of Wilmington) and the Lobdell Car Wheel Company. Lobdell was a leading manufacturer of wheels and also a large foundry. To this day many Lobdell manhole covers are still found throughout the City of Wilmington. A true Forgotten Delaware fan will find him or herself down on all fours at any railroad museum they encounter checking out the names cast into the wheels of old railroad cars or looking down as the walk the city streets checking out manhole covers in old neighborhoods in Wilmington. These great old photos are from the Library of Congress.
